Let’s Get to the Point: What to Expect from Microneedling

Could needles help you achieve better skin? Many of our most popular non-surgical treatments use needles to inject substances into the skin, like injectable BOTOX® or fillers. However, these injectable treatments aren’t the only way to use needles to rejuvenate the skin. Microneedling also uses needles. This treatment systematically damages the skin and encourages a healing response in the body.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a skin treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to systematically puncture the skin. Damaging the skin to rejuvenate it may seem counterproductive, but it is actually the basis of many skin treatments including chemical peels and laser resurfacing. The damage causes a healing response in the body and jumpstarts the production of collagen and elastin, skin components that are abundant in youthful, beautiful skin. The skin thickens and becomes smoother and less wrinkled. Microneedling can also improve pigmentation, evening out skin tone.

A typical microneedling treatment takes 1.5-2 hours. The needling portion lasts about an hour, but it takes time for the topical anesthetic to start working.

A Typical Microneedling Treatment at STC Plastic Surgery

Microneedling treatments are performed in a comfortable treatment room at our plastic surgery office. On the day of your treatment, you’ll arrive and check in. We start the process by cleansing the skin. This removes any makeup, lotions, dirt, oil, or bacteria that may be on the skin. Then, a topical anesthetic is applied to the clean skin.

It takes about 30 minutes for the topical anesthetic to start working. Spend this time relaxing. Many patients bring along a book or magazine. You can also use electronic devices like a phone, tablet, or music player while you wait.

Once the skin is numb, we use a special device that holds multiple needles to puncture the skin. The device allows us to make many punctures at once and ensures proper spacing and depth. We can treat the entire face, or target specific areas, depending on your goals for treatment.

We finish the procedure with a final cleansing and topical serums as needed. Return home immediately and resume activity when you’re ready.

Comfort and Microneedling- What You Need to Know

If the thought of hundreds of tiny needle punctures sounds intimidating, don’t shy away from the treatment just yet. Yes, patients do receive many small pricks with a needle, but since we use a topical anesthetic, comfort levels are increased. Many patients tolerate this treatment very well. Our treatments are all performed by highly skilled and trained providers. This isn’t a treatment you want to attempt at home.

Post-treatment, some tenderness is expected. Give your skin a little extra TLC for a few days while you heal. Patients can resume regular activities as soon as they are ready, often just a day or two later.
