You can’t prevent it – as we all age we lose the facial fat that once helped us look beautiful or handsome. And we add fat where we don’t want it. As hollows start to form in our cheeks, nasolabial folds deepen and marionette lines appear, many in Inland Empire want to do something about it. If volume loss is the problem, popular solutions include dermal filler injections like Juvéderm® and Restylane® or fat grafting. Some choose the easy solution – fillers. Before you decide how to restore your good looks, there’s some new information you’ll need to know. Today we’ll discuss:
- Why choose fat grafting over fillers to restore volume and soften nasolabial folds?
- Why isn’t traditional fat transfer often the procedure of choice?
- What makes BeautiFill Fat Grafting a better option than traditional fat transfer or fillers?
Fillers Like Juvéderm® and Restylane® Are Easy – Why Use Fat Grafting?
Fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® are widely known and popular. They provide great results quickly and easily. If you need to soften nasolabial folds and marionette lines or add volume in your cheeks, why consider fat transfer?
Here’s why: Fat grafting lasts much longer and costs less in the long run. Getting it now will ensure you’ll look good if you unexpectedly need to find a new job.
Juvéderm® and Restylane®, like most other fillers, are based on a body substance – hyaluronic acid. The beautiful, immediate results you get from them will only last about a year. That’s because your body readily absorbs hyaluronic acid. Filler manufacturers recommend scheduling shots roughly every year to maintain your great new look.
Fat grafting results can last much longer – for years or even a lifetime. Your body won’t normally reject or absorb your own fat cells. So, a good procedure can give you a beautiful look that will last a long time.
There’s no doubt that your initial Juvéderm® or Restylane® injections cost less than fat transfer. But as you go back for more, year after year, the total amount you’ll pay will soon exceed the cost of a fat grafting procedure.
In addition, it’s often wise to invest in a younger look while you have the money. When you retire, or if you ever lose your job, you’ll be glad you don’t have to pay ever year to look younger. It’s a proven fact that new friends and prospective employers favor younger-looking, more attractive people. Getting a great new look that lasts could give you a big advantage just when you need it most.
Why Isn’t Traditional Fat Transfer Often the Procedure of Choice Now?
Since fat grafting can give you a great new look that lasts, why don’t more people choose it now? The problem is traditional fat transfer procedures give your delicate fat cells an experience they were not meant to have. Many will not survive even a year after they’re transferred to your face. As we’ll discuss shortly, BeautiFill has a beautiful solution to this problem.
But as for the fat transfer procedure still performed by most doctors, the Annals of Medicine and Surgery article, “The Science behind Autologous Fat Grafting” pointed out:
In 1987, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons reported the problems and difficulties that have been encountered with autologous fat transplantation and concludes that only 30% of the injected fat can be expected to survive for 1-year.
Doctors and researchers have been working for years to improve the “take rate,” the percentage of cells that survive and thrive in their new location. It’s now up to 50-70%. But that improvement isn’t much to celebrate when you consider what happens to your face when up to half of transplanted fat cells die. If an even layer of fat cells under your facial skin perish, hollows, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines would start to reappear. And if most of the fat cells in certain areas die, you could soon find bumps and lumps you won’t like. You can understand why I’m thrilled to be the first facial plastic surgeon to offer BeautiFill fat grafting in Inland Empire.
Why Choose BeautiFill for Volume Loss, Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines in Inland Empire?
I chose to offer BeautiFill fat grafting because it provides my patients with fat transfer’s major advantages – long-lasting natural results and lower total cost – while avoiding the limitations of traditional fat grafting. Doctors using the BeautiFill method often see up to 95% of transplanted fat cells survive!
If you compare the fat transfer method most doctors use now with the BeautiFill procedure you’ll see why:
Traditional Fat Transfer steps
- Suck fat cells from the undesirable body location with liposuction
- Wash blood and cellular debris from the removed fat with saline
- Spin the fat cells in a centrifuge to concentrate them
- Pack fat cells into syringes manually, even pushing them in with gloved fingers
- Inject fat cells where needed
Delicate fat cells were not meant to be treated so roughly. Using the traditional method, as few as 30% to 50% of fat cells removed with liposuction survive to the next step. Washing the cells leaves only about 20% to 25% intact.
BeautiFill treats your fat cells much more gently. In fact, out of 50cc of fat removed with this method, 40-45cc are often healthy and ready to be injected where needed. That’s an enormous step forward!
In addition, BeautiFill protects your fat cells, keeping them inside a sealed system. Traditional fat transfer methods expose them to outside air. It’s important to recognize what’s floating around in the air: According to Scientific American magazine, “as many as 2,000 different kinds of microbes may be present in the air we breathe on any given day.”
The fat transfer procedure used in most doctors’ offices today exposes your fat cells to those microbes before injecting them under your skin. Additionally, not all blood and cellular debris are removed by washing. Your body’s white blood cells, in an effort to protect you, will attack those “invaders.” This creates inflammation and kills some of your newly transplanted fat cells.
BeautiFill equipment, on the other hand, shields delicate fat cells from microbe-laden air. Rather than the rough treatment of traditional liposuction, the BeautiFill cannula that removes fat has a patented laser at the end. The laser melts fat cells and the system gently draws them into the removal tube. Next, your fat goes through a filter to cleanse away fibrous tissue and blood. Then the equipment seals your clean fat cells into syringes. I can then inject them where ever you need additional volume.
Those fat cells can improve your nasolabial folds, facial hollows, and marionette lines. BeautiFill’s gentle system helps far more fat cells survive – up to 95%!
BeautiFill – This Major Advance in Fat Grafting is Available Here, but Not Everywhere
It’s evident that with “take rates” up to 95%, BeautiFill can be a much better option than traditional fat grafting or even fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane®. Unfortunately, important new advances often take time to catch on. Most cosmetic medical practices don’t yet offer it. So, if you want to restore volume, soften nasolabial folds and improve marionette lines with BeautiFill in Inland Empire, we offer it here at STC Plastic Surgery in Ontario.
